Three Reasons to Live in Kensington, San Diego

Recently named "the only real neighborhood in San Diego" by an article in San Diego Reader, Kensington appeals to San Diego homebuyers looking for a small town feel close to big city amenities. The neighborhood is located approximately six miles northeast of San Diego’s downtown Gaslamp Quarter and is easily reachable using the I-805 and I-15 freeways. The neighborhood was originally developed in the 1920s and has a unique charm that sets it apart from San Diego’s other mid-city urban neighborhoods. Here are just a few reasons why Kensington, San Diego is such a great place to live!
1. Unique architecture
Kensington is known for its distinctive California Spanish-style single family homes. Richard Requa, a famous local architect, gave much of the neighborhood its unique Mediterranean flair, with red tiled roofs and colorful stucco walls.
2. Friendly vibe
Something that strikes people almost as soon as they set foot in Kensington is its friendly, small town feel. The neighborhood’s quiet, winding streets are extremely walkable, and it’s not uncommon to be greeted warmly by perfect strangers. Most of Kensington’s restaurants feature sidewalk seating, providing even more opportunity to people-watch and interact with your neighbors.
3. Small, charming business district.
Kensington’s “business district” may only be three blocks long, but there is still plenty to explore! You can get your fix of homestyle Mexican food at Ponce’s, or go more upscale with classic French cuisine at Bleu Bohème or creative Italian-inspired dishes at Cucina Sorella. After dinner, head to the Kensington Club for a drink and to enjoy a live local band or DJ. If movies are more your thing, Ken Cinema is one of the last single screen movie venues in San Diego county, playing independent, foreign, and classic films. The neighborhood also offers an organic grocery store, bank, ice cream parlor, library, small gym, deli and liquor store, and a nice park with a playground.
Housing costs in Kensington tend to be higher than the San Diego average. A few new condo and apartment complexes have sprung up in recent years, but much of the neighborhood remains centered on single family homes.
