If you’re searching for the quintessential San Diego surfer vibe, then look no further - Encinitas has been named one of the 20 best surf towns in the world by National Geographic. Located about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego, the neighborhood is known for its friendly people and laidback attitude and is one of Southern California’s favorite beach towns.
But it’s not just the beaches - there are so many other things to love about living in Encinitas. Here are just a few!
1. Surfing!
Encinitas is one of the best places to experience the classic San Diego surfer culture. The neighborhood is home to some of the oldest and most well-respected surf shops in the country, including Hansen's and Encinitas Surfboards. If you’re new to the sport, take a lesson with Leucadia Surf School. Then join out-of-town beginners and local experts alike at the famous Moonlight Beach for a surf session and post-surf bonfire - Moonlight is one of the few remaining public beaches in San Diego with fire rings.
2. Shopping
Encinitas' vibrant downtown shopping district is over 100 years old and features an eclectic array of shops, cafes, art studios, record stores, restaurants, and bars. The main street is extremely pedestrian-friendly, with wide sidewalks and slow traffic. The shopping area is also host to a variety of fun, family-friendly San Diego events, including the annual Encinitas April Street Fair and the Encinitas Fall Festival, as well as the Encinitas Classic Car Nights, held every third Thursday between June and September, and a weekly farmers market.
3. The outdoor lifestyle
The outdoor lifestyle. San Diego is a very physically active city, and Encinitas is no exception. Aside from the world-famous surfing, Encinitas has a plethora of yoga studios. If running is more your style, the neighborhood hosts a number of races throughout the year, including the Surfing Madonna 5k/10k/15k on the beach and the Encinitas Half Marathon. The nearby San Diego Bay Botanic Garden has over 4,000 types of plants and over 37 acres of exhibits to stroll through. You can also do some bird-watching at the San Elijo Lagoon, where forty percent of the birds in North America pass through on their annual migrations. Encinitas is also home to the world-famous Encinitas Self-Realization Fellowship, where you can stroll through the meditation gardens and koi ponds and catch a glimpse of the famous Swami’s Beach.
