Three Reasons to Live in Bankers Hill, San Diego

Bankers Hill, otherwise known as Park West, is a historic neighborhood in uptown San Diego, with Hillcrest and Mission Hills to the north, Downtown San Diego to the south, and Balboa Park to the east. Originally named Bankers Hill for the financiers and other affluent residents who called the area home in the 1800s and 1900s, the neighborhood features beautiful Victorian and Craftsman homes designed by Irving Gill and other notable architects. Many of these homes have been restored into bed-and-breakfasts and office space for accountants, attorneys, and doctors. Bankers Hill was named one of San Diego's best neighborhoods by San Diego Magazine in 2014 and has a walkability score of 89.Here are a few of my top reasons to love Bankers Hill!
1. The views
You might not expect it from a tucked-away neighborhood like this, but Bankers Hill features some of the best views in the city. Thanks to its location on the side of a hill, visitors and residents can enjoy expansive views of the entire San Diego Bay and can even watch the fireworks shows over the Embarcadero! And of course, the views of Balboa park to the east aren’t too shabby, either. Which brings me to my next point . . .
2. Balboa Park
San Diego's very own Balboa Park was named one of the best parks in the world in 2004, and when you live in Bankers Hill, you’ll have this treasure right in your backyard. Whether you’re a runner, a photographer, a botanist, a music lover, an art lover, an animal lover, or just a lover of picnics - the Park has something for you! Balboa Park is home to 15 major museums, including San Diego’s National History Museum and Museum of Art, as well as several arts venues, a variety of gardens, and the world famous San Diego Zoo. At 1,200 acres, it is also America’s largest urban cultural park.
3. Food
If you work up an appetite exploring the Park, Bankers Hill is home to some of San Diego’s most treasured restaurants, as well as some newer favorites. The Prado Restaurant, located in Balboa Park’s House of Hospitality, has been named one of America’s top 10 restaurants by Gourmet Magazine and offers a fantastic Tuesday “date night” deal. Cucina Urbana, located just a block away from the Park, has hands-down some of the best food and one of the best wine lists in the city, at prices that can’t be beat. Hane Sushi offers high-quality sushi, sashimi, and traditional Japanese appetizers and a low-key atmosphere. Wet Stone Wine Bar is a little more off-the beaten-path, offering an extensive global and domestic wine list paired with Latin-inspired small plates. While Bankers Hill’s restaurants aren’t all located within a couple of blocks of each other, as is the case in many of San Diego’s other neighborhoods, its food is well worth the extra walk!
Bankers Hill’s housing options range from historic homes to older low-rise condos and courtyard apartments to luxury high-rise buildings. If you’re looking for a neighborhood with history and charisma, but with all the modern amenities, contact me today about Bankers Hill!
